What Does an Ideal Strategic Planning Process Look Like?

The most recent quarterly issue of Carrier Management, a journal for helping property & casualty insurance executives better understand trends and challenges facing their industry, featured one of my articles on the strategic planning process. Like my other articles appearing in this journal, the following subject-matter is relevant to companies in any industry.

While strategy is something company executives should always be thinking about, we’re entering that time when goals are re-evaluated, and plans are formalized for the next few years. Many company leaders, though, look at this process with dread since it is often yields little to nothing in terms of an actual plan. The challenge: executives always have some idea of the goals they want to achieve but lack a workable process for ensuring they are the right goals or how to reach those goals.

The article below provides a 4-step framework for helping executives effectively and painlessly develop corporate goals that position the company for success. It is important to note that, like other situations, a company cannot simply copy/paste what others are doing and expect it to work for them. The framework outlined in this article is meant to be a starting point – it will take a few rounds to refine it into something that will work seamlessly for your company or non-profit organization.
